'Ambrosia' Apple

Just a quick link to an apple article:

And B.C. created Ambrosia (Financial Post)

Ambrosia is one of the many new apple cultivars that have shown up in supermarkets in the last couple years. I'm kind of ambivalent about it--when it's good it's pretty decent (arguably better than its likely parents, Starking Delicious and Gold Delicious), and when it's bad it picks up a lot of the bad characteristics of Delicious.

Still, I'm happy to see there are still apple varieties originating the old fashioned way: as chance seedlings. (You might that think as a breeder I'd prefer them to be the product of a breeding program, but honestly, random luck is much cooler.) (That assumes that you don't consider breeding programs random luck...)

I thought Ambrosia was a chance seedling?

In the early 1990s, the Mennell family of B.C.'s Similkameen Valley discovered a tree in their orchard that had been replanted with Jonagold trees in an area that had previously contained Red and Golden Delicious trees. As is sometimes the case with new apple varieties, a chance seedling grew.

Ate my first ambrosia tonight. Bought is at a Safeway in Bethesda Md. My judgment: Excellent,. it is crisp and non-acidy. But at about $2.65 a pound, rather expensive. But I thought it better than any other variety on the socal market.

Was hoping to find some info about they do when used in baking and cooking. Our grocery store just started to carry them - $1.99 a lb. Making fruit crostatas and am considering them.

Our family would rather have chocolate chip cookies than fruit, so when my daughter told me to PLEASE get some more Honeycrisp apples for her lunch, I thought we had found the food of the gods. So I was very disappointed when Fresh Market, my source, had only one Honeycrisp apple. I got it and a sack full of Ambrosia apples.

We did a taste test on Honeycrisp vs. Ambrosia. The Ambrosia are the best apples any of us have ever had. The bowl of Honeycrisp slices went to the horses. I know we are fickle, but those Ambrosia apples are beyond description. Are you sure they're good for you?

I have a video on this subject at http://www.ambrosiaapples.info.
Check it out.

I'm with Lifepundit. I'm not normally a fan of the humble apple, but was blown away by the Ambrosia. Desperate for fruit in the frozen north - MN, February, need I say more - I walked into my local Kwik Trip for some bananas and found these as well. I was very surprised by the intense floral notes of rose, and the flesh was incredibly crisp, juicy, and sweet. I will be returning to Kwik Trip for more.

Just discovered these last week at Costco. Thought I would give them a try as they were the cheapest of all their varieties for sale. We are so pleased with these apples that I will be buying them as often as Costco carries them. Sweet, crisp and juicy, everything you want in an apple. I had never heard of them before and I live in Wa., the apple state!

I love love love Ambrosia. It's the only apple I eat at the moment. It's the only apple in the West that is comparable to Fuji variety of Japan, which is an expensive variety sold throughout Asia. I missed Fuji ever since I moved to UK because I couldn't find them. But Ambrosia's sweet and scrisp note is a great replacement. And I shall never settle for less!

This week was my first time tasting both 'Honeycrisp' and 'Ambrosia' and I was a bit disappointed with the 'Honeycrisp', but I think they had been a tad bit overripe, though otherwise had a nice crunch and juiciness and what I consider an excellent balance of sweet and tartness. One apple in the batch had been superior, thus again leading me to believe the others had peaked just a bit.

'Ambrosia' ... first of all what a beautiful looking apple and soooo wonderfully sweet n' JUICY and crunchy, I can't stop eating them! These BC grown apples arrived in prime condition at my Super Store in Alberta and at the excellent price of 98 cents a lb., sure can't complain about that! This is likely the best apple variety I've ever eaten, though it lacks just slightly in depth of flavor and doesn't have that bit of tartness that I enjoy ... though, again it's fabulous winner ... YUM!
