Yay for Gomphotheres!

Until about a minute ago I didn't even know what a Gomphothere was, but now I'm really excited to have learned a new and entertaining word.

Fruits the Gomphotheres Ate (Shifting Baselines Blog)

It reminds me of the seminar I saw maybe ten years ago with some English guy who had concluded that apples had evolved to have their seeds dispersed by bears. I forget the reasoning behind it, but it seemed to make sense.

At least they're just dispersed by them, not pollinated by them. I'd imagine that would make apples a wee bit more expensive.
