Way down yonder in the pawpaw patch...

Speaking of fruit articles in the mainstream press, I just noticed that today's USA Today has a most-of-a-page article on pawpaws! It's not exactly a comprehensive treatise on the subject, but it's nicely done, and a big surprise considering the paper it's in.

I was also pleased to see the mention, with a link, of Peterson's Pawpaw's, an effort which in many ways has been the private counterpart to the impressive Kentucky State Pawpaw program. Neal Peterson has done a lot to preserve and promote the pawpaw, and I'm embarrassed to say, completely slipped my mind when I wrote my earlier pawpaw article.

I desperately want to try a pawpaw, but haven't ever been able to find them in a store. Tried to grow them in Iowa, but the trees I got were too young and then we moved; I'd like to grow them here, but it's too shady in my yard.

They're interesting, but I can't say I'm a huge fan, though if I had a place for them I'd still grow them for the novelty value.

My limited experience suggests that pawpaws actually do quite well in moderate shade, they just won't flower much. But if you don't even know if you like the fruit, that might be a blessing in the long run. Pollination might be a bigger issue...you might have to hand pollinate if you didn't get many flowers.

Actually, see here:
Kentucky State pawpaw growing info.

"Although the pawpaw is capable of fruiting in the shade, optimum yields are obtained in open exposure..."

Not a huge fan? From the descriptions I've read, they sound fabulous--are they not all they're cracked up to be?

A lot of people like them, so don't let me sour you against them, and it's certainly an interesting flavor. You can definitely tell it's Annonaceae...there are clear parallels between the taste of pawpaws and cherimoya as far as I'm concerned, though not really the same. I think I just find something about the texture a little too gloppy for me. I've only had it twice, to be fair, so maybe the stuff I got was past its prime somehow.

I could see pawpaw added to something else being a really nice flavor (some one once told me that pawpaw bread is great).
