All About Apples
I'm not sure how I've managed to miss this site until now. Maybe it's new (the fact that there are only two posts in the forums suggests this may be the case). Anyway, I just stumbled across All About Apples, which is chock-full of apple info. I particularly liked the variety list, which is remarkably extensive, though it'd be considerably cooler if they actually had images for them all.
There are forums (though vacant at the moment), a directory of orchards, apple news (complete with RSS feeds!), nutrition info, articles and interviews. They've also got recipes for all you food blogger types (which seem to comprise most of my readership.) Some sections are a little thin, but it looks to have the promise of becoming a very informative site. I think it may be an industry promotional tool, so maybe it's a little too excited and glowing about apples at points, but that's okay.
I'm going to put a link in the sidebar replacing the one for Apple Journal, which has not updated since I linked to it way back in February, and my e-mails to them have bounced, so I'm guessing that's largely a defunct operation (if any one knows otherwise, let me know.) That's valuable real estate over there!

All About Apples is a good site. As you said it's a little thin in spots but that will most likely change because it is reasonably new so they haven't had a chance to do as much as they want to. Keep checking back, it's being added to on a regular basis. Apple Journal went defunct after the guy who was doing it left town.
one of the best reading i have ever done on apples was in Edward Behr's The Art of Eating. It's out of print but worth finding! It's accessible, detailed and well researched.
